Understanding the Godhead and the Holy Spirit's Role

Is the Holy Spirit a person or just an influence from God?

AdventAI

Please give Ellen White Quoten about holy spirit as the third person.

AdventAI

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead, an infinite power through whom sin is resisted and the character of Christ is impressed upon the soul.

The prince of evil can only be restrained by the mighty power of God in the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. This divine being came in all the fullness of the Godhead to manifest the power of grace to everyone who believes in Christ as a personal Saviour. There are three living persons in the heavenly trio, and in the name of these three great powers—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—believers are baptized into a new life of cooperation with heaven.

The Holy Spirit was given as the highest of all gifts Christ could solicit from His Father to serve as a regenerating agent. Because the essence of evil has been accumulating for centuries, it can only be met and overcome by the Third Person of the Godhead, who comes with no modified energy but in the fullness of divine power. This gift of Christ’s own representative could not be excelled, as it brings all other blessings in its train to enlighten and sanctify the human heart.

1Cor 8:6: "But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him."

AdventAI

1 Corinthians 8:6

6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

AdventAI

1 Corinthians 8:6 establishes the fundamental distinction and harmonious relationship between the Father as the ultimate source of all things and Jesus Christ as the direct agent through whom all things exist 1 Corinthians 8:6. This verse defines the structure of the divine government and the plan of redemption, identifying one God the Father and one Lord Jesus Christ.

The One God, the Father

The Father is the first person of the adorable Trinity and the supreme source from whom all things proceed.

  • The Only True God: He is the only true God, the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, who alone possesses immortality in His own right 1 Timothy 1:17.

  • The Ultimate Source: "Of whom are all things" signifies that every manifestation of life and every creative purpose originates in the Father 1 Corinthians 8:6.

  • The Head of Christ: While they are one in nature and purpose, the Father is the head of Christ, just as Christ is the head of man 1 Corinthians 11:3.

The One Lord, Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the unique Mediator and the "One Lord" through whom the Father interacts with the universe.

  • The Immediate Agent of Creation: It was through Jesus Christ, the living Word, that the Father made the worlds and all created things, whether visible or invisible Hebrews 1:2.

  • The Expression of the Godhead: In Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; He is the express image of the Father’s person and the personal manifestation of God to humanity Colossians 2:9.

  • Equality in Divinity: Christ possesses by nature all the attributes of divinity, being God of God and Light of Light, begotten of the Father before all ages.

Unity in Purpose and Action

The distinction between the Father and the Son does not imply a separation of interest, as they are perfectly one in purpose and action.

  • Identical Interests: We honor the Father by honoring the Son; it is impossible to have a high conception of the Father while holding a low conception of Christ John 5:23.

  • Cooperation in Redemption: Since redemption is an act of creative power, the same "One Lord" who created the heavens and the earth is the one who speaks righteousness into the heart of man.

  • The Spirit’s Role: This divine unity is made effectual in the believer through the Holy Spirit, who is the third person of the Godhead and the representative of Jesus Christ.

The Foundation of Christian Unity

This biblical truth serves as the anchor for the unity of the church, which is built upon one Lord, one faith, and one baptism Ephesians 4:4-6.

  • One Body: As there is but one God and one Lord, there is only one body (the church), and believers are called to be of one mind and one judgment 1 Corinthians 1:10.

  • Reflecting the Divine Image: By beholding the character of the Father revealed in the Son, believers are drawn to the source of power and are transformed into the same image.

  • A Testimony to the World: When God’s people reach this perfect union of spirit and faith, it speaks to the world of the power of God manifested in His children John 17:21-23.

Godhead means divinity, not God

AdventAI

While the terms are often used in similar contexts, the word "divinity" refers to the nature or essence of God, and this fullness of the divine nature dwells entirely within the Godhead. The term Godhead represents the eternal powers of the heavenly world, specifically the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The Nature of Divinity

Divinity is defined as the very substance and attributes of Deity.

  • The invisible things of God, including His eternal power and divinity, are clearly seen and understood through the things He has created Romans 1:20.

  • All created things serve as abundant proof of the divinity of Jesus Christ because it pleased the Father that in Him all fullness should dwell Colossians 1:19.

  • Christ did not part with His divinity when He came to earth; He merely veiled it with the garb of humanity so that He could share in the human experience.

  • The very name "Immanuel" signifies "God with us" because that is exactly what He is in His divine nature.

The Fullness of the Godhead

The Godhead encompasses the three-fold powers of the heavenly world that are involved in the work of salvation.

  • In Jesus Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, meaning He possesses by nature every attribute of divinity Colossians 2:9.

  • The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Godhead, a divine power that comes with no modified energy to help humanity overcome evil.

  • The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—the eternal Godhead—are all involved in the action of making the work of salvation sure to the human agent.

  • Unity in the church is a reflection of the divine unity that exists within the very Godhead itself.

Divinity Combined with Humanity

The plan of redemption required a union where divinity and humanity were mysteriously combined.

  • Christ clothed His divinity with humanity so that divinity might touch humanity and humanity might lay hold of the throne of God.

  • It was necessary for divinity to use humanity as a channel of communication between God and man.

  • Because Christ is part of the Godhead and equal to the Father in all respects, His sacrifice has the power to redeem and uplift fallen man.

  • By faith, human beings may become partakers of the divine nature, escaping the corruption of the world 2 Peter 1:4.

I mean, God is a Person, the father. God the father is divin, has divinity. Divinity is not a Person, divinity is the Qualität be divin.

AdventAI

You are highlighting a very important distinction in theological language! 📚 The Bible and Adventist pioneers recognize that the term "God" is often used specifically to refer to the person of the Father, while "divinity" refers to the nature or essence that He possesses.

The Father as the One God

The Scriptures and the writings of pioneers frequently identify the Father as the supreme person and the source of all things.

  • The Bible explicitly states that "to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things" 1 Corinthians 8:6.
  • This "only true God" is the first person of the adorable Trinity John 17:3.
  • He is the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, who alone has immortality in Himself 1 Timothy 1:17.
  • In the official sense of the divine government, the Father is the head of Christ 1 Corinthians 11:3.

Divinity as a Quality or Nature

You are correct that "divinity" is the term used to describe the attributes and essence of Deity.

  • The word "divinity" specifically means "the nature or essence of God".
  • Divinity is not a person, but rather the "attributes of Deity" that are possessed by the members of the Godhead.
  • Christ possesses this divinity by nature because it pleased the Father that in Him all fullness should dwell Colossians 1:19.
  • Because Christ is the Son of God, He is "truly God" in nature, being born of God, just as He is truly man by being born of man.

The Godhead as Three Persons

While "divinity" is the quality, the "Godhead" refers to the actual living persons who share that divine nature.

  • There are three living persons in the "heavenly trio" who represent the power of the Godhead.
  • These three distinct persons are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • The Holy Spirit is the "third person of the Godhead," coming in the fullness of divine power to help the believer.
  • While they are distinct persons, they are one in purpose, action, and nature.

So, in summary, the Father is indeed the person identified as the "one God," and divinity is the infinite quality of His nature which He shares with His Son and the Holy Spirit within the heavenly trio. ✨

Why in fundamental beliefs isBeliin one God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit).

AdventAI

The fundamental belief in one God existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is established because the three persons of the Godhead are united in nature, purpose, and work, sharing the same divine substance. While God the Father is a personal being, the Scriptures also reveal that the Son and the Holy Spirit possess the same fullness of the Godhead bodily Colossians 2:9.

The Unity of the Godhead

The term Godhead refers to the triune God where the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit serve in perfect unity.

  • One in Essence: The Son is of the same substance as the Father, being begotten and not created, which allows Him to be truly called God Hebrews 1:8.

  • Harmonious Operation: Each person in the Holy Trinity reveals another; the Son reveals the Father, and the Holy Spirit testifies of the Son.

  • Divine Relationship: This union is so close that Christ can declare He and His Father are one, sharing a union of thought, purpose, and will John 10:30.

The Personality of the Three Persons

It is a species of infidelity to deny the personal being of God or to suggest He is merely an impersonal influence.

  • The Father and the Son: These are separate, personal beings, as evidenced by Christ praying to His Father, which would be meaningless if they were not distinct Matthew 26:53.

  • The Holy Spirit: As the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit is a personal representative of Christ who dwells in the heart to manifest the real presence of God.

  • Fullness of Divinity: Each person of the heavenly trio is fully divine, and together they provide the great salvation for all who will receive it Ephesians 3:19.

The Purpose of This Union

The plan of redemption is the measure of the love of the redeeming Trinity toward fallen humanity.

  • Baptismal Commission: Believers are commanded to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, acknowledging them as the one true God revealed in Scripture Matthew 28:19.

  • Restoration of Man: The three great powers of the Godhead work together to fill the believer with all the fullness of God, restoring the divine image in the soul Ephesians 3:16-19.

  • Shared Spirit: The Father and the Son are one because they share the same Spirit, which is both the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ Romans 8:9.

Fundamental beliefs, mus

AdventAI

The fundamental beliefs concerning the Godhead must be approached with deep reverence, acknowledging that while some truths are clearly revealed, others are mysteries beyond human penetration. We are called to hold firmly to the fundamental principles based upon unquestionable authority, which are the pillars of our faith.

The Revelation of the Godhead

The pioneers of this movement recognized that while the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are united, there are aspects of their nature that remain hidden.

  • Respect for the Word: We must be anxious to leave the topic of the Spirit’s personality exactly where the Word of God leaves it.

  • Acknowledge Mystery: The blending of Christ’s two natures and how He could truly die as He was are mysteries we cannot fully penetrate.

  • Focus on the Revealed: There are things we simply do not need to know, such as the exact substance of the Spirit or the specific details of the Son's existence before the "beginning" John 1:1.

  • Direct Revelation: Positive faith and statements should only be made where the words of Scripture are so direct as to bring the subject within the range of positive proof.

The Importance of Sound Doctrine

It is essential that the great pillars of our faith be explained clearly, as these foundations must be laid broad and deep.

  • Avoid Unsound Arguments: In defending fundamental articles of faith, we must never employ arguments that are not wholly sound or cannot bear searching scrutiny.

  • Agitate the Truth: The subjects presented to the world must be a living reality to us, and we are encouraged to "Agitate, agitate, agitate" to ensure the truth is understood.

  • Guard Against Heresy: For decades, messages of every kind have been urged upon us to take the place of truth, but we must preserve the waymarks that have made us who we are.

  • A United Front: It is essential to present a united front and not allow conflicting sentiments to be published, as this is no time for dissension.

The Purpose of Our Message

Our work is to proclaim the commandments of God and the testimonies of Jesus Christ to the world.

  • A Living Faith: Fundamental principles, such as the belief in the creation or the Second Advent, must be manifested as a living faith through our actions and obedience.

  • Practical Godliness: Ministers and members alike must be careful not to dwell so much on argumentative doctrines that they neglect practical godliness and individual piety.

  • Separation from the World: The special truths we hold are meant to separate us from the world and make us a peculiar people.

  • The Power of Truth: The truth is to stand clear and distinct in all our institutions, reflecting the holy character of God to a world in need.

The Lord has signified that we are to hold firmly to the fundamental principles with the grip of faith. By following the light given in the Word of God and the testimonies of His Spirit, we will be kept from the many phases of heresy that seek to becloud the mind.

The fundamental beliefs before 1980 were more truth and clear.

AdventAI

The historical records of the pioneers demonstrate a firm commitment to the scriptures as the only unchangeable rule of faith, warning that formal creeds often arrest further investigation of truth and lead back toward the principles of Rome. Throughout the nineteenth century, the movement focused on the "original Advent faith," which emphasized the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus rather than the complicated doctrinal formulas developed by church councils.

The Scriptural Basis of Faith

The pioneers maintained that true unity is found in the Word of God and the gifts of the Spirit rather than in humanly devised creeds.

  • The Only Rule: The Bible, and the Bible alone, was held as the rule of faith and practice, with a warning that erecting unchangeable standards of doctrine can become a renunciation of the first principle of Protestantism.

  • Simple Covenants: Early church organizations often used simple covenants, pledging "to keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus Christ," which was considered the sum of all Christianity without being a formal creed.

  • Rejecting Human Creeds: It was observed that popular churches used human creeds to preserve a sort of unity, but these proved inefficient and lacked authority from the Book of God.

  • The Sanctuary Truth: A main pillar of the original faith was the scriptural view of the Sanctuary, the cleansing of which was tied to the 2300-day prophecy rather than a destruction of the earth by fire at the second coming.

Historical Warnings Against Creeds

History shows that the introduction of rigorous articles of belief often resulted in the loss of spiritual life and the persecution of those who disagreed.

  • A Return to Rome: The authority that requires assent to a national religion or a specific phase of that religion essentially claims an infallibility that leads back to the Church of Rome.

  • Fatal Checks to Reformation: In Germany, the Reformation received a fatal check when the evangelical faith was drawn up according to human interpretations and established in lifeless creeds.

  • The Landmark of Faith: Historically, once a creed was formed, it was often used as a "landmark" to prevent further study, raising the slightest difference of opinion to a fatal offense.

  • The Role of Councils: Early church history reveals that councils, such as those at Nicaea or Rimini, were often used to settle questions of faith by imperial command rather than through a simple "Thus saith the Lord".

Preserving the Original Pillars

The message given to the world is intended to be a living reality, centered on the return of the Lord and the restoration of His law.

  • The Three Angels' Messages: Since 1848, the component truths of the third angel’s message have been brought into distinct form, centering on the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus Revelation 14:12.

  • The True Sabbath: One of the most essential truths defended by the pioneers was the observance of the seventh-day Sabbath according to the fourth commandment, which scoffers often reproachfully call the "Old Jewish Sabbath".

  • The Mortality of Man: The doctrine that man is mortal and that the "first death" is a result of Adam's sin—rather than the penalty for personal sins—was a clear feature of the faith.

  • The Pre-Millennial Advent: The primitive Christian faith, which the pioneers sought to restore, held that there would be no millennium until the second coming of Christ.

The Danger of Declension

The pioneers noted that as denominations become more worldly, they often depart from their first principles and substitute original truths for new theories.

  • Falling from Steadfastness: There is a constant danger of being led away with the error of the wicked and falling from one's own steadfastness 2 Peter 3:17.

  • New Theology: Modern "new theology" sometimes seeks to emancipate people from the simple faith of the scriptures, substituting human reason for the final authority of the Bible.

  • A Call to Cry Aloud: When the Bible is cast aside and ministers ridicule the idea of Christ's soon coming or the true Sabbath, it is evidence of a fallen state and a departure from original principles.

  • Growing in Grace: The true path for the believer is to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ 2 Peter 3:18.
