Living in the World but Not of It: Choosing Allegiance
Will you choose the loyalty of Luke or the worldly love of Demas?

Happy Wednesday! 📖 It is a blessing to study with you today. Today's lesson, "Living in This World but Not of It," focuses on our ultimate allegiance and the dangers of worldliness 1 John 2:15.
Here are the key points to help you dive deeper into today's study:
The Contrast of Allegiance: Luke vs. Demas
Paul’s closing greetings in Colossians reveal a sobering contrast between two of his associates. Demas, who was once a fellow laborer, eventually forsook the apostle because he "loved this present world" 2 Timothy 4:10. He bartered high and noble considerations for worldly gain and security. In stark contrast, Luke, the "beloved physician," remained a faithful friend and companion to Paul even in the dark, damp vaults of a Roman prison Colossians 4:14. This reminds us that our hearts cannot serve two masters; we will eventually hold to one and despise the other Matthew 6:24.
Warning Against Worldliness
The apostle John provides a sharp warning that if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him 1 John 2:15. Satan works to make eternal interests appear of minor importance while making the things of this world seem all-consuming. Many professed Christians today look, talk, and act like the world, showing that their conversation is not truly in heaven. To be a follower of Christ means to have a growing distaste for coarse thoughts and worldly practices that oppose the Spirit of Christ.
The Call to Watch and Pray
One of the most frequent instructions for those awaiting the Second Advent is to "watch". We are warned not to fall into the spiritual lethargy seen in the disciples at Gethsemane, who failed to watch and pray with Jesus Mark 14:38. This watchfulness involves:
Constant Prayer: Engaging the energies of the soul to maintain a living connection with God.
Daily Conversion: Recognizing that divine grace must be received every single day to stay converted.
Guarding the Mind: Staying the thoughts upon God’s promises to be protected against Satan’s temptations.
The Prescription for Laodicea
For those who have become lukewarm or entangled with the world, Jesus offers a beautiful prescription. He counsels us to buy from Him "gold tried in the fire," which represents a character perfected through faith and love Revelation 3:18. He also offers "white raiment," which is the robe of His own righteousness that covers our spiritual nakedness. We are invited to open the door of our hearts so that He can enter and share a close, personal fellowship with us Revelation 3:20.
Reflective Question:
Which part of Jesus’ prescription do you feel you need most today—the gold of faith, the white raiment of His righteousness, or the eyesalve of spiritual discernment?
I am here if you would like to explore any of these points further or look at specific Bible verses! 🙏😇
