Matthew 16

1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?

9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Matthew 16 teaches that the path of true discipleship is one of unwavering faith in Christ as the Son of God and a life characterized by total self-denial and cross-bearing Matthew 16:24.

The Foundation of Faith 🪨

The Christian life begins with a clear understanding of who Jesus is, as revealed when He asked His disciples about His identity Luke 22:67-70. While the world may be undecided or provide various interpretations of His mission, the church is built upon the "Petrine" foundation—the heaven-given faith that confesses Christ as the Savior. This faith is not merely a theoretical knowledge but a living power that must be substantiated by the Word of God and the daily practice of the truth. Just as Christ promised that the gates of Hades would not prevail against His church, those who are firmly rooted in this Rock of Ages will find the strength to resist every phase of error and temptation.

The Requirement of Self-Denial ✝️

The central call of Matthew 16 is a summons to follow Christ in His mission of sacrifice Matthew 16:24. This involves several critical practical steps:

  • Total Surrender: To come after Jesus, one must deny self, which means bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5.

  • A Change of Heart: True conversion changes a person's moral taste, leading them to keep the glory of God in view in every expenditure and action.

  • Victory Over Self: Self-denial includes ruling one's spirit when passion seeks mastery, resisting the urge to find fault, and standing at the post of duty even when others fail.

  • Active Service: We are to be doers of the Word, engaging in works of benevolence and kindness rather than living for ourselves.

The Example of the Master 🕊️

Jesus did not ask us to walk a path He did not first tread Himself. Out of unutterable love for a perishing race, the King of Glory shrouded His majesty in humanity and accepted a baptism of blood. He was actuated by the joy set before Him—the reward of seeing souls eternally saved in the kingdom of God Hebrews 12:2. When we consider the hands and feet of our Deliverer torn by cruel nails, it should silence every complaint about the hardships of our own cross-bearing. His life of sacrifice is the pattern for our own; to be a Christian is to be a reproduction of the character of Christ in love, purity, and tender solicitude for souls.

The Warning Against Worldliness ⚠️

There is a danger in seeking a broad and pleasant path that satisfies worldly inclinations Matthew 18:17. Those who choose their own way instead of the Lord’s way lead themselves toward perdition, for man’s way is ultimately the hardest possible path. We must be on guard against a "form of godliness" that lacks the power of self-sacrifice, as a name on a church book is worthless without a heart united to Christ. To value any earthly consideration—be it family, property, or life itself—above Christ is to fail the test of discipleship.

The Path of Safety and Health 🍎

Self-denial extends even to our physical habits, such as eating, drinking, and dressing. Health reform is a matter of duty and a path of safety that protects our power of self-control and our ability to appreciate eternal realities. By subduing animal propensities and practicing temperance, we gain a peace of conscience that arises only from right-doing. Parents have a God-given responsibility to teach their children these principles of self-denial from their youth Psalms 71:17.

The Final Reward 👑

Though the work of soul-saving requires much self-sacrifice, the end of the journey brings a reward that outweighs every trial. Those who have been co-laborers with God will eventually forget their past sorrows and perplexities as they see the fruits of their labor saved for eternity. If we are willing to suffer with the Man of Calvary and walk in His footprints, we shall one day sit with Him upon His throne Hebrews 8:12. Let us therefore do our very best, serving the Lord with a fervent spirit as we near the end of this earth's history Romans 12:11.

The theme for this sermon is "The High Call of Discipleship: Self-Denial, the Cross, and the Crown" Matthew 16:24. 👑

This theme emphasizes that true godliness requires a vigorous, daily work of sanctification and the conquering of besetting sins in the strength of Christ. It underscores that while the world offers broad and pleasant paths, the Lord's way of humility and sacrifice is the only one that leads to life. By choosing to yield ourselves completely to Him, we allow Christ to rule every act and bring every thought into captivity to His obedience 2 Corinthians 10:5. Ultimately, this theme encourages us to look past our current trials to the marvelous plan of salvation and the everlasting reward prepared for the righteous. ✨
