Revelation 7

1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.

6 Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.

7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand.

8 Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.

9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,

12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?

14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

The 144,000 mentioned in Revelation 7 is a literal number representing the specific company of saints who are alive on earth at the second coming of Christ and translated without seeing death. 🌟

The Literal Nature of the Number

While some choose to spiritualize or mystify the plain statements of the Word, the most reliable rule of interpretation is to take every declaration in its obvious and literal sense unless the context clearly indicates a figure. Taking the number 144,000 as a literal count brings harmony to the prophetic narrative and honors the idea that God speaks to be understood. This company is a distinct group, separate from the "great multitude" of dead saints who are raised at the resurrection, and they stand in a perfect square on the sea of glass.

Characteristics of the 144,000

This group is characterized by their complete victory over sin and their unwavering loyalty to the law of God 🛡️:

  • Total Purity: They are described as virgins, meaning they have not been defiled with the false doctrines or corruptions of apostate churches Revelation 14:4.

  • Perfect Speech: No guile is found in their mouths, and they are without fault before the throne of God Revelation 14:5.

  • Special Experience: They sing a "new song" that no one else can learn because it is the song of their unique experience—having stood through the time of Jacob's trouble without a mediator Revelation 14:3.

  • Constant Devotion: They follow the Lamb wherever He goes, having first followed Him on earth in trustful obedience Revelation 14:4.

The Sealing Work

Before the winds of strife are permitted to blow upon the earth, these servants of God receive a literal seal in their foreheads Revelation 7:1-3.

  • The Seal and the Name: This seal is inseparably connected with the name and character of the Father Revelation 14:1.

  • The Sabbath Connection: The keeping of the holy seventh-day Sabbath according to the commandment serves as the sign or seal of their righteous act and faith Exodus 31:17.

  • Protection: This mark protects them during the outpouring of the seven last plagues, allowing them to stand through a time of trouble such as never was Daniel 12:1.

Identity as the "True Israel"

Though the 144,000 are numbered from the twelve tribes of Israel, this does not limit them to literal Jews.

  • Spiritual Seed: In the New Covenant, a "Jew" is one who is so inwardly, and the true Israel consists of those who are Abraham's seed through faith in Christ Romans 2:28-29.

  • Twelve Divisions: The names of the twelve tribes represent twelve divisions of the one hundred and forty-four thousand, reflecting specific traits of character found in the sons of Jacob.

  • The Harvest: They are called the "firstfruits" unto God and the Lamb, representing the first part of the harvest gathered from the earth at the end of time Revelation 14:4.

While some find it difficult to accept the literal number, we are assured that those who are the elect of God will soon know the reality of this company without question. It is our privilege to seek that purity of heart and life that will allow us to be numbered among that holy throng. 🙏✨
