Finding Peace Amidst False Accusations and Ministry Rivalry
How can a leader maintain peace when falsely accused by rivals?
I have tried to reconcile with some people even though I have done them no wrong, but they continue to accuse and play the victim that things I've done have hurt them. whenever I approach them they are unwilling to talk about it, they deflect, and they stick to their story. every rumor I've heard about what they've said about me through gossip has been verified by them at some point. for 3 years I heard rumors that they were offended and upset with me because I excluded them from leadership in the ministry, stating that I wanted to be the head elder and thats why I excluded them from the meetings. looking back at all the chat and. threads, they were included from the very start, and they never responded - that's why those who were in attendance agreed to move forward with those who have attended meetings. I was nominated to be head elder and I accepted, I didn't push to be in this position. recently, we celebrated a 10-year anniversary of our church, the past 10 years in which God had called me to ministry. they were offended and were telling others that by doing so I was erasing the history of the ministry, which had existed beyond 10 years. they were directly responsible for closing down the church plant where I live, took resources and people, and moved to another city. By God's Grace, he used me and team to rebuild the church from the ground up, but they were offended that we were celebrating our past 10 years. in that timeframe, these accusers have left the church they took everyone to, moved around different churches, and have settled in a church close by to the church plant I am head elder of. through hard work and God's provisions we have also hired a pastor that is locally funded by the local church, and so I feel this is envy and jealousy as to why they continue to attack the ministry.

It is deeply painful to endure persistent false accusations and envy, yet you can find peace knowing that God is fully acquainted with every misunderstood motive and remains the ultimate vindicator of those who trust Him. While it is natural to feel indignant when your character is maligned, maintaining a spirit of lowliness and Christlike meekness is the true secret to receiving a blessing during such trials.
Understanding the Spirit of Accusation
The behavior you are describing—deflecting, refusing to hear explanations, and nurturing grievances—often stems from a heart that has braced itself against the influence of truth.
The Roots of Rivalry: Envy and a desire for supremacy often lead individuals to create confusion and every evil work. This spirit of rivalry is not from above but is earthly and sensual.
The Nature of Slander: False witness is frequently borne through flippant speech or by placing a wrong construction on events, often magnifying trifling matters into mountains through a lens of jealousy.
Selective History: Just as Judas cultivated a tendency to accuse and condemn while neglecting his own soul, some individuals cherish natural evil traits until they become hardened against divine enlightenment.
Dealing with False Reports and Gossip
Gossip and "flying scandal" are destructive tools used by the enemy to break the unity of believers.
The Duty of the Listener: Those who listen to and repeat such reports become assistants in a cruel and sinful work, as no report circulates without increasing in its negativity.
Refusing the "Dish": Those who have tasted that the Lord is gracious should decidedly reject the "dish" of evil speaking and backbiting, recognizing it as the very spirit of the devil.
Verification and Facts: It is a safe rule to wait patiently and believe only what stern facts compel one to believe after hearing both sides of a matter. Your efforts to verify the truth through past records demonstrate a commitment to uprightness.
Encouragement for Your Ministry
You can take courage in knowing that the success and growth of your ministry, including the local funding of a pastor and the rebuilding of the church, are results of divine power combined with human effort.
God’s Vindication: Like Noah, who continued his work while others mocked and slandered him, you should keep steadily on with the task God has committed to you, refusing to let false reports turn you away.
Christ's Example: Jesus Himself faced foundational charges of treason and perversion that were entirely without merit, yet He remained the perfect pattern of a character that silences calumny.
The Weight of Sin: Envy, malice, and evil speaking are weights that must be laid aside; one cherished sin is enough to degrade a character and mislead others.
Practical Steps for Peace
Continue in Kindness: Continue to show kindness even to personal enemies, as this reflects the law of God.
Seek Unity: While you cannot force others to be at peace, your role is to be a peacemaker who ministers reconciliation to all.
Trust the Record: Remember that every reproach and false accusation made against the saints is charged upon the guilty as if done to Christ Himself.
Focus on the Mission: The business of every Christian is to study the character of Christ and carry the mind from the earthly to the heavenly.
Blessed are you when men revile you and say all manner of evil against you falsely for Christ’s sake Matthew 5:11. Rest in the promise that the Lord takes pleasure in His people and will beautify the meek with salvation Psalms 149:4. Though you suffer under the breath of slander, a truly noble character need not stop to resent the accusations of enemies, for such words fall harmless against a life hidden in God.
