Religious Liberty and Preventing Ecclesiastical Tyranny Within the Church
Can a church commit the same errors as the Papacy it seeks to reform?

Religious liberty is not merely a political concept for the state, but a vital spiritual principle that must be strictly maintained within the church to prevent the rise of human arogance and ecclesiastical tyranny. When those in positions of responsibility attempt to control the faith or actions of their brethren, they repeat the very errors of the Papacy that the Reformation sought to overcome.
The Divine Principle of Individual Conscience
God is the only Lord of the conscience, and He never forces the human will or mandates worship through compulsion. Every individual is held personally responsible for the light they have received from the Word of God, and this responsibility cannot be delegated to any church authority or majority vote.
Supreme Authority of the Word: The Word of God must be recognized as the supreme authority in the church, and a "Thus saith the Lord" is never to be set aside for a "Thus saith the church".
Individual Search for Truth: Every soul must accept Bible truths for themselves as an individual act, searching the Scriptures personally rather than relying on the wisdom of ministers or leaders.
The Rights of the Mind: God created the mind free, and any attempt by ecclesiastical rulers to assume dominion over the faith of others is an impious presumption that leads to hypocrisy and meanness.
Identifying Ecclesiastical Tyranny and "Popery"
The spirit of "popery"—the desire to exercise arbitrary power over others—can manifest even among those who claim to believe present truth if they are not closely connected to Christ. This spirit is revealed when men in responsible positions keep the "key of knowledge," hindering those who would enter into a deeper understanding of truth.
Kingly Power and Control: There is a great evil to be rooted out of council and board meetings where men strive for control over their fellow men, leading them to fear man rather than God.
Binding by Rules: Men are not to league together to bind their brethren by human rules and restrictions, for God has not put into human hands the power that belongs alone to Him.
The "Image" within the Church: When a church uses secular influence to make laws that bind the consciences of those whom God has made free, it is the masterly working of satanic agencies.
Bigotry and Censorship: True Protestantism requires a constant protest against bigotry and the withdrawal of confidence or misrepresentation of motives toward those who honestly differ in their views.
Unity Through Freedom, Not Uniformity
True unity in the church is not achieved through legislation or the suppression of independent judgment, but through the "unity of the Spirit" as individuals eat of the Bread of Life. Drawing apart—one small church from another—grieves the Holy Spirit, yet this unity must be based on harmonious action in the grace of Christ, not on human policy.
Deference and Courtesy: While maintaining independence of judgment, believers are to cultivate Christian courtesy and deference to one another's judgment in the spirit of meekness.
Dissent and Conscience: In matters of conscience, the majority has no power; even a small minority must be respected in their refusal to yield to popular demands that conflict with God's law Acts 4:19.
The Danger of Stagnation: Church leaders often build monuments to past reformers while simultaneously trampling down the growth of truth springing from the same seed in the present day.
The Responsibility of the "Banner"
The banner of truth and religious liberty held aloft by the founders of the gospel church has been committed to our hands in this last conflict. Those blessed with a knowledge of the Word are held responsible for this great gift and must ensure that the church remains an asylum for the oppressed rather than a source of oppression.
Watchmen Must Awake: Church leaders who remain indifferent to the restriction of liberty or who act as "slothful watchmen" are working on the enemy's side.
Sanctification of Capabilites: Religious liberty within the church requires the culture and training of every capability for the Lord's service, allowing every member an opportunity to act their part.
Harmony with Heaven: As long as probation continues, the church must cooperate with the plan of heaven to preserve liberty of conscience, for if we sit in quietude, we are not doing the will of God.
Ultimately, we must remember that "with the mind I myself serve the law of God," and any surrender of the right to think and believe according to one's own conscience is a surrender of the soul itself Romans 7:25. Every member of the church must stand firm for God, recognizing that His crown is to be lifted above all earthly and ecclesiastical potentates.
