The Sublime Porte and the Vatican

It is highly probable that Turkey and the Vatican will come into diplomatic relations before long. The French protectorate, whose maintenance France made a condition of her participation in the Congress of Berlin, is at an end. The Latin Patriarch will no longer have to seek an audience with the Sultan through the French ambassador. The Young Turks desire to treat with the Vatican direct, and to that end an interchange of ambassadors will become imperative. French prestige in the East will suffer immensely; but the infidels of the republic must remember that “we can not eat our bread and have it, too.”—Western Watchman (Roman Catholic), July 25, 1909.
