IT IS NOT TRUE EVANGELISM.
The New York Tribune has this to say on religion in 1901:— Evangelism has made an unsatisfactory showing. Various twentieth-century revival movements were started at the beginning of the year, but not one of them fulfilled expectations. Even church-members appear to be out of sympathy with the purely emotional appeals to sinners that were once so potent. True evangelism, true revival work, is never based, in whole or in part, on the “purely emotional,” but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The emotionalism is incidental to the work, not an essential. It is a fruit, not the seed or tree. All those revivals based on emotional appeals and theatrical efforts will prove shallow and ephemeral. The true revival is based on God’s living Word, in which is doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. It lays a good foundation—Christ Jesus—and builds thereon the truth of God.
