The Cost of Greater New York
THE expenditures of the city government of Greater New York show an enormous increase over the expenditures of the several municipalities before consolidation into one city. The figures show that it costs at least thirty per cent. more to carry on the present city government than it did to carry on the separate city governments before they were consolidated. Before consolidation the policing of the territory now included in the municipality cost less than $10,000,000; now it costs more than $12,000,000. Fire protection formerly cost a little over $4,000,000; now it costs nearly $5,000,000. The annual school expenditures were formerly $10,339,466; now they are $18,512,817. The expenditures of the Health Department show an increase of more than $200,000. The New York World places the blame for this upon a dishonest and incapable administration.
