BUT AS THOU WILT.

Should any man say, “I asked for a blessing that was plainly promised, but did not receive it,” I should then say, Are you equally clear that the obtaining of it would be for your good? “Yes,” say you, “it would make me comfortable.” Just so; but is it for your good to be comfortable? “And it would get me out of my difficulty.” But may it not be for your lasting good to be in the difficulty, and may therenot be something in the world a great deal higher for you and for me than merely to be comfortable and to get out of difficulty? “Not as I will, but as thou wilt,” was the prayer of the man who had more power in prayer than all of us put together—“Not as I will, but as thou wilt.” We must always put that in.—Spurgeon.
