THE INDIANS.

Joseph Cook asserts that General Crook has so far succeeded in reforming the Apaches, that instead of being as they once were, the fiercest and most irreclaimable of savages, they are now peaceful, and have for two years been industrious to the point of self-support, not only raising sufficient food for themselves, but having a surplus to sell in the markets of the military posts. Gen. Crook maintains that any tribe can be reclaimed as easily as this one. The transformation that has been wrought contains a wonderful lesson. It presents in a vivid light the fearful responsibility which this nation has incurred in its treatment of the Indian tribes.
