Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
The one who overcomes the world is the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God, and that victory of faith belongs to everyone born of God who trusts in Christ. To believe is to trust Jesus as personal Redeemer and Saviour, casting the whole soul upon the Lord rather than upon any human help. To overcome is to conquer the world, the flesh, and the devil by looking in faith to Christ, because in human nature He met every temptation and overcame on man's behalf so that humanity may lay hold of divinity and overcome in His name. That faith joins the believer to His atoning death for sin and His present pleading at the Father's right hand, which takes away sin, gives power to become sons of God, and keeps from falling. Overcoming is known by loving God and His children and keeping His commandments, and it is not an instantaneous work but the work of a lifetime carried on day by day through prayer, putting away sin, and persevering in seeking God until the warfare closes.
Faith That Overcomes
The overcomer is none other than the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God, and this overcoming is the victory of faith that belongs to everyone born of God, so that everyone who trusts in Christ can overcome the world. Overcoming the world comes only in this way, by believing that Jesus is the Son of God. This victory is known by loving God, by loving the children of God, and by keeping His commandments, which are not grievous, and it is to be sought as spiritual dominion over the powers of darkness through cultivating love.
Believing means trusting in Jesus Christ as personal Redeemer and Saviour, casting the whole soul upon the Lord instead of trusting in any human being, knowing where help is found, and through Him becoming an overcomer. Unbelief in Christ and unwillingness to accept the truths He came to proclaim is the root of sin and has made humans aliens from God, while belief in Christ as a personal Saviour is the only salvation provided for the sinner and the first step toward restoration to peace with God. This faith joins the believer to Christ's atoning death for sin and to His present pleading at His Father's right hand, which paid the redemption price, takes away sin, gives power to become sons of God, keeps from falling, and gives life to all who are obedient to His will.
Christ in human nature faced every temptation and overcame in man's behalf, so that humanity can lay hold of divinity and overcome in His name. His victory shows that God's grace enables a spotless life and victory in the conflict between good and evil. The words Christ gave to Israel remain instruction for reaching the standard of righteousness and advancing in this conquest.
Victory and Holy Life
To overcome the world is to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil by conquering Satan's temptations through trust in Jesus by looking in faith to Christ. Even the oldest and most experienced Christians are assailed by Satan's temptations, yet they have conquered in this way, and every soul who looks in faith to Christ may do the same. This is done through strength from God and not merely human power.
Overcoming means breaking the power of Satan and breaking with him by fleeing to Christ, trusting in God's power alone to break Satan's chain and fetters. Christ came to cut men loose from the originator of sin, to give mastery over the power of the destroyer, to save from the sting of the serpent, and through His imparted righteousness to place all human beings on vantage ground. Standing on that vantage ground, the believer has spiritual dominion over the powers of darkness and gains victory after victory, which is to be sought through cultivating love. The victor is saved, gains access to the tree of life, and gains life that measures with the life of God, because heaven is worth everything.
Victory is given by God to all who look to Him and walk in the footsteps of Christ with contrition of heart and a humble walk with God, in union with the Holy Spirit in the church, bringing sanctification and comfort. No magnificence of outward display can gain it while the heart is serving idols and the hands are polluted with iniquity. Prayer brings Jesus near and gives the fainting, perplexed soul fresh strength and grace to overcome. Through faith the person perseveres in seeking God's wisdom and receives instruction from heavenly agencies.
Overcoming is known by loving God, loving the children of God, and keeping His commandments, which are not grievous. It is known by becoming holy and pure, without which no one can enter heaven, unto spiritual perfection and a holy, Christlike life. Such overcoming is not an instantaneous work and not an emotion but the work of a lifetime, carried on day by day by praying, putting away sin, expelling all pride as sin from the soul, and gaining a daily experience until the warfare closes. Believing that He saves by grace leads believers to speak of their faith, enlighten others, build His kingdom, and make sacrifices as children of God. The decision to flee to Christ must be made before it is everlastingly too late, for a few more steps in rebellion will place a person where light and truth have no power over him, and to continue in that course divorces the soul from God.
