1 Kings 14:31
And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his stead. And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his stead.
The verse belongs to the history of the two separate kingdoms of Judah and Israel for about eighty years, from the revolt of the ten tribes to the death of Jehoshaphat, covering the reigns of several kings of both Judah and Israel. Within that history it stands in a sad record of general moral decline in Judah and Israel, in which the faithfulness or failure of leaders shaped the people. The chapter places the campaign of Shishak against Judah, investigated at Karnak, in the reign of Rehoboam, with the fuller account found in 2 Chronicles 12.
The verse closes Rehoboam's reign by recording his death and burial in the city of David, naming his mother as Naamah the Ammonitess, and stating that his son Abijam reigned in his place. The succession it records brought to the throne in Judah Abijam, a wicked king whose reign was brief.
By describing Rehoboam's death as sleeping with his fathers, the verse presents death as sleep. That sleep means the dead rest until they are awakened by God in the resurrection.
