1 Kings 18:6

So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

Ahab and Obadiah divided the land between them to pass throughout it separately, each going one way by himself. They did this to search for springs and streams and water, hoping to find pasture to keep their starving animals and livestock alive during the prolonged drought and severe famine. The lack of rain was so severe that even the king's household was suffering. This search took place during the three-and-a-half-year famine.

Obadiah undertook this search as Ahab's servant while remaining faithful to God. At this time Elijah was faithfully warning Israel against idolatry and waiting for a sign of repentance. The same chapter then records the victory over idolatry on Mount Carmel and the rain that followed.
