1 Kings 22:51

Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned two years over Israel.

The verse belongs to the history of the separate kingdoms of Israel and Judah after the revolt of the ten tribes, recorded in the remainder of 1 Kings after chapter 11. That history covers about eighty years from the revolt to the death of Jehoshaphat and recounts the reigns of several kings. The chapter in which the verse stands closes the history begun in 1 Kings 11 and is grouped with 1 Kings 21.

Within that larger history the verse lies in the account of Ahab's reign covered in 1 Kings 16-22. Ahab was Israel's seventh king, reigned twenty-two years, and was contemporary with Jehoshaphat king of Judah. The verse records that Ahab's son Ahaziah succeeded him as king of Israel in Samaria and reigned two years over Israel. In doing so it continues the story of Ahab's weak and wicked reign by portraying the wickedness of his son Ahaziah as he succeeds to the throne.
