1 Kings 9:21

Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy, upon those did Solomon levy a tribute of bondservice unto this day.

1 Kings 9:21 belongs to the history of Solomon's reign during the period of the undivided kingdom. That same history of his reign is also related in 2 Chronicles 1-9. The verse records that the descendants of the Canaanite peoples left in the land, whom Israel had not utterly destroyed or driven out, remained there, and Solomon levied on them a tribute of forced labor and bondservice.

The levy continued unto the time described, meaning the time when the account was written. The tribute placed those peoples in a condition of bondage, showing that being required to pay tribute can mean a loss of liberty. The bondservice is illustrated by Egypt's king Sesostris, who had captured foreigners build temples and used no Egyptians for the work.
