1 Samuel 10:5

After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

The verse belongs to the history in 1 Samuel 10 in which the elders of Israel asked Samuel to appoint a king over them, giving the unjust conduct of his sons as their stated reason. It was one of the exact signs Samuel gave Saul for his journey home, and its fulfillment when Saul met the prophets confirmed that God had appointed him to lead Israel. Samuel also assured Saul that the Spirit of God would come upon him and qualify him for the position he was called to fill.

At Gibeah, the hill of God, Saul was to meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place and returning from worship, singing praise to God with musical instruments before them. When Saul met them the Spirit of God came upon him, so that he joined their praise and prophesied with them. He spoke divine truth with unexpected fluency and wisdom, showing that God was preparing him and qualifying him for his appointed work.

The prophesying company was connected with the companies of young men whom Samuel gathered and trained as sons of the prophets in the schools of the prophets, who received the Spirit of God and prophesied together. Their example illustrates that when God teaches, students are transformed by His Spirit. That transforming influence brings thoughts into harmony with God's will and establishes a living connection between earth and heaven, which the schools of the prophets eagerly sought.
