1 Samuel 17:37
David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee. David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
The verse belongs to David's God-directed mission to save Israel from the Philistines, when Goliath's challenge stirred his zeal to defend the honor of God and his people. While guarding his sheep, David had been delivered by God from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear. David humbly credited those earlier rescues to the Lord, and his confidence that the same Lord would deliver him from Goliath and the Philistine rested on that past deliverance.
His trust was reliance on God rather than on human means, not on his youth, weapons, strength, or equipment. In response, Saul permitted David to go to fight, sending him with the wish and assurance that the Lord would be with him. In the emergency David looked to God with steady faith, believed in Him, and went in His name, and that faith enabled him to defeat the Philistine champion. David's example teaches that God's servants should humbly depend on God to give truth the victory, rather than trusting their own arguments or boasting in themselves.
