David's Servants Ask Nabal for Provisionsby AbiQueenie7

1 Samuel 25:6

And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.

The greeting belongs to the time when David was hunted by Saul, after Saul slew the priests of the Lord and Abiathar son of Ahimelech escaped to stay with David in safety. It was sent to Nabal in the wilderness of Paran at sheep-shearing time, a season of hospitality. Nabal was a wealthy man with vast possessions in that region and a descendant of Caleb.

David and his men had protected Nabal's flocks and herds from marauders. Being in sore need of provisions, David sent ten young men to speak in his name, wishing well-being on Nabal, on his household, and on all that belonged to him. That courteous, peace-seeking greeting accompanied a request for food for himself and his men, in keeping with the custom of the times for asking help. Nabal answered the respectful request with insolence and refused to share his abundance.
