1 Timothy 5:2

The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

The elder women are to be treated with the respect and tenderness due to mothers, and the younger women with the regard due to sisters, with complete purity. This family-like way of treating one another reflects Christlike tenderness and love. It requires kindness and courtesy while avoiding trifling conversation and unbecoming familiarity with women, whether married or single.

At all times it forbids any cheapness in talk between men and women, and all familiarity and commonness. This includes being familiar with young girls and inviting unmarried women and girls to places where privacy must be strictly preserved, all of which the Lord condemns. Men who practice such familiarity and commonness and do not know better are not to be trusted, and keeping this purity is part of being alert to the importance of the time and being faithful witnesses.

For women, the same rule calls for being modest and pure and not overly familiar with young men, thereby setting an example even for older people. For youth, it requires reverence for age and office, rising up before the aged and respecting gray hairs. They are to receive counsel and reproof from those with experience without offense instead of pushing forward in self-importance.

It calls for modest, quiet, sober-minded youth, and for mature men well balanced with principle who can pray as well as talk. A man's value is marked by mind, heart, sincere purpose, and daily life rather than by restless, talkative, dictatorial self-assertion. For workers of different ages, younger workers are to care for and respect aged workers as fathers and mothers, to appreciate their counsel and not place needless burdens on them, while experienced workers teach and prepare the younger to carry on the work. For medical students, the same family pattern applies: to regard an experienced physician as a father and themselves as children needing instruction, care, and correction, and to approach the work with humility.
