King Asa Burns His Grandmother's Idolby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 15:16

And also concerning Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.

The verse belongs to the account of Asa's reign in Judah and to the record of his good reign as king. It records that he removed his mother Maachah from her position as queen mother because she had made an idol for worship in a grove. He destroyed the idol, and her dignity and influence did not keep him from acting against idolatry and removing an influence that could lead the people away from worshiping God. Asa is counted among Judah's good kings and as the greatest king after Solomon.

The verse belongs to an account of Asa's good deeds, triumphs, and prosperity as the result of his piety and obedience to God. It belongs to Israel's history showing God's conditional dealings with Israel. It shows God favoring the people when they obeyed and punishing them when they disobeyed.
