2 Chronicles 6:14
And said, O LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keepest covenant, and shewest mercy unto thy servants, that walk before thee with all their hearts: And said, O LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keepest covenant, and shewest mercy unto thy servants, that walk before thee with all their hearts:
The verse opens Solomon's spoken dedicatory prayer given after the temple was finished and erected, offered at its dedication before the altar in the presence and hearing of all Israel, with Solomon kneeling on a brazen scaffold with hands spread toward heaven while the congregation bowed with faces to the ground, and its spoken words are preserved in Scripture. It declares that there is no God like the Lord God of Israel in heaven nor in earth, who keeps covenant and shows mercy to His servants who walk before Him with all their hearts and serve Him wholeheartedly. This confession of incomparability stands at the beginning of the prayer and grounds Solomon's appeal for God to hear prayer and act with mercy. The appeal asks Him to keep what He promised to David, to verify His word, to regard prayer toward the house where He put His name, to hear from heaven His dwelling place, and when He hears to forgive. God answered the prayer by sending fire from heaven that consumed the burnt offering and afterward by appearing to Solomon by night to say that He had heard his prayer, and in the setting of this temple prayer the verse also teaches that God is not confined to a temple, for He meets His people by His Spirit when they gather for worship, visits them wherever they are, and may be worshiped in every place.
