2 Kings 10:35

And Jehu slept with his fathers: and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead.

2 Kings 10:35 closes the account of Jehu's reign, recording his death and burial in Samaria and the succession of his son Jehoahaz as king. Jehu took the kingdom of Israel after killing Joram and began a new dynasty in Israel. The verse belongs to the history of Israel, which the books of Kings recount more fully than the history of Judah.

Jehu was raised up to destroy the family of Ahab and to exterminate the worship of Baal, which he carried out fiercely, swiftly, thoroughly and unsparingly. His actions against the Baal worshipers were a punishment of a destructive religion in harmony with God's plan for Israel. Yet not all of Jehu's work is attributed to God, for his actions were also marked by rashness, excess, and self-worship.

Though he destroyed Baal out of Israel, he himself turned to and cleaved to the worship of the calves, and thus failed to redeem Israel from false worship. Ahab's serving of Baal in place of the God of Israel violated the first commandment, while Jeroboam's making of golden calves as representations of the God that brought Israel out of Egypt violated the second commandment. Jehu thus removed the first-commandment sin of Ahab but continued the second-commandment sin of Jeroboam that laid the foundation of Israel's ruin.
