Joash Crowned King in the Temple CourtBibleWorld

2 Kings 11:13

And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the LORD.

Athaliah was the grandmother of Joash who usurped the throne of Judah after the death of her son Ahaziah and sought to put to death all her son's children to put them out of her way. The infant Joash and his nurse were saved and hidden in the temple by his aunt, who was the wife of Jehoiada the high priest, until he could be proclaimed. By the time Joash was seven years old his grandmother's reign had become so corrupt that the people revolted and brought Joash out from his hiding-place.

The verse describes Athaliah hearing the noise of the guard and the people at the proclamation and crowning of Joash as king. She came into the temple of the LORD where it was taking place to see what was happening. After she entered, Athaliah was slain.

While Jehoiada lived the young king remained under his influence, the house of the Lord was repaired, and the worship of the true God was well established once more. Her reign over Judah between Ahaziah and Joash falls within a nearly 300-year period extending from Joram of Israel through the kings of Israel to Hoshea and through the kings of Judah to Josiah and Jehoahaz. It belongs to Judah's spotted record in which the kingdom prospered under righteous, faithful rulers, while turning from God to gross idolatry brought calamity upon rulers and people.
