2 Kings 11:19

And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.

Joash was seven years old, the son of Ahaziah and the grandson of Jehoram and Athaliah. After Ahaziah died, Athaliah seized the throne and sought to put to death all her son's children, but Joash was hidden with his nurse in the temple by his aunt, the wife of Jehoiada the high priest. Under the leadership of the priest Jehoiada, the rulers over hundreds, the captains, the guard, and all the people of the land escorted him, bringing him down from the house of the Lord to the king's house and seating him on the throne of the kings. This followed the end of Athaliah's wicked and corrupt usurpation in revolt, when she was slain.

That enthronement was the beginning of Joash's reign in Judah and the restoration of Judah's true king. It belongs to the succession of Judah's kings Ahaziah, Athaliah, Joash, Amaziah, Azariah or Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, and Jehoahaz. That succession covers a wonderfully interesting period of nearly three hundred years, during which Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Zephaniah, and Nahum prophesied in Judah. Judah's record in that period shows that the kingdom always prospered under righteous, faithful rulers, while turning from God to the grossest idolatry brought calamity on rulers and people.

After being enthroned, Joash remained under Jehoiada's influence, repaired the house of the Lord, and reestablished the worship of the true God.
