2 Kings 13:2

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

2 Kings 13:2 belongs to the record of Israel's kings during a period marked by transgression, war, defeat, and captivity. It places the reign it describes within Israel's continuing departure from God, following the idolatrous practices associated with Jeroboam and not keeping the Lord's commandments. In its chapter it stands alongside the account of Elisha's final sickness and his effort to teach the king persistence and faithfulness, which the king failed to learn. It shows how idolatry led Israel astray, whereas obedience could have made the kingdom strong and stable.
