2 Kings 18:6

For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.

To cleave to the Lord is to trust in Him, to refuse to turn away from following Him, and to keep the commandments commanded through Moses. Because of that faithfulness the Lord was with Hezekiah, giving him prosperity and success in all he undertook. That personal loyalty was expressed in reforms that advanced both the spiritual and the temporal welfare of Judah.

The same loyalty was lived out by Nehemiah in leading the returned exiles under Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah in rebuilding the temple and the wall of Jerusalem. Though they were a feeble people exposed to their enemies, meeting varied trials and strong opposition, with heavy burdens resting on the leaders, they moved forward in unwavering confidence, humility of spirit, and firm reliance upon God, believing He would cause His truth to triumph. The Lord was with him in that work as He had been with King Hezekiah. That faithfulness meant staying committed to God and to the rebuilding work despite threats, ridicule, and invitations to abandon it, praying for God's help and refusing to be diverted from duty.

This steadfast obedience in restoration and reform pictures the work of spiritual restoration to be wrought in the closing days of earth's history. Through such faithful ones God preserves in the earth a knowledge of Himself and of His law, as guardians of the true worship and keepers of the holy oracles.
