2 Kings 2:21
And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land. And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.
The spring near Jericho had become polluted and unfit for use, and its waters were bringing death and barrenness to the surrounding land. Elisha went out to the spring itself, cast salt into it, and declared in the name of the Lord that the waters were healed. From that time the waters were healed so that they would no longer cause death or barren land, bringing life and blessing where there had been blight and death. The cure was a miraculous act of God and not the result of human wisdom. This compassionate act showed God's willingness to heal the spiritual maladies of Israel.
The polluted stream represents a soul separated from God by sin. Sin shuts the soul away from God and destroys its desire and capacity to know Him, while deranging human nature, perverting the mind, corrupting the imagination, and degrading its powers, leaving it polluted and morally weak. The healing of the waters illustrates God's power to cleanse and transform such a soul.
The salt and the spring teach that those who receive God's grace are to become agents through whom others receive saving grace. God chose them not only to adopt them as His own but to bless the world through them.
