No Passover on the scale Josiah kept had been observed since the days of the judges who judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel nor of the kings of Judah. It was kept in harmony with the provisions of the book of the law. Abundant offerings marked the feast. It was held to strengthen Judah's faith in God. Yet despite its greatness and Josiah's zeal, it could not atone for the sins of earlier generations nor change the hearts of those who clung to idolatry.
