2 Kings 23:36
Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah.
Jehoiakim is introduced as king in Jerusalem, twenty-five years old when he began to reign, reigning eleven years, his mother being Zebudah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. His personal name had been Eliakim, and he was the elder brother of Jehoahaz. Pharaoh-Necho, king of Egypt, deposed Jehoahaz and placed Eliakim on Judah's throne, changing his name to Jehoiakim.
The account stands in the final section of the history of the kings, covering the history of Judah after the ten tribes had been swept away and extending to and leading toward the Babylonian captivity. It opens the record of Jehoiakim's eleven-year reign in Jerusalem, a reign that ended with his death in Jerusalem rather than with his removal to Babylon. His reign stands in the setting of the events that preceded and coincided with Nebuchadnezzar's advance with his army against Jerusalem.
Nebuchadnezzar bound Jehoiakim in fetters to carry him to Babylon but did not take him. He came against him twice, first in the third year of his reign and again three years later after his rebellion against Babylon, and Jehoiakim then reigned five more years in Jerusalem before dying. No reason is given for why he was left in Jerusalem. The change of reign after Josiah to Jehoiakim is placed at 607 B.C. and treated as the end of Israel's observance of release years and jubilees, from which 2,450 years are counted to 1843 as the great Jubilee of Jubilees.
