2 Kings 3:9
So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days’ journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them. So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days’ journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
The allied kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom had made a circuitous march of seven days when they found themselves with no water for the army and for the cattle that followed them. That lack of provision after the long march set an apparent impossibility directly across their way. It severely tested both faith and patience, by the length of the way and by the lack of provision.
It was a test of faith of the kind that all who trust God in His work will also meet in similar form. The lesson is to go forward with the grace of Christ, without questioning the length of the way or the obstacles in it. When human resources fail, those who put their trust not in what they themselves can do but in what God can do for and through them will realize His power in their work.
The Lord has ways and means for every emergency to meet the need. He works in ways least expected. How He will work cannot be laid out in clear lines, for the Holy One whose power is of old and whose ways are past finding out is not to be limited, and to mark out the ways by which God must work brings disappointment. The battle against the enemy is turned not by human strength but by the strength of God, the mighty General of armies, working for the glory of His own name.
