2 Kings 5:21
So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well? So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?
Elisha had sent Naaman away after refusing the gifts he had brought, and Gehazi then secretly ran after him to carry out a dishonest plan rooted in covetousness to obtain for himself the reward that had been refused. When Naaman saw Gehazi running after him, he got down from his chariot and stopped to meet him and ask whether all was well. That courteous inquiry opened the way for Gehazi to give a false assurance that all was well while concealing his true purpose.
God revealed to Elisha every detail of this encounter, including the words Gehazi spoke to Naaman. Gehazi's deceit was not prevented by living in Elisha's household and being exposed to his godly example. His falsehood and deception to obtain the gifts was sin against the God of sincerity and truth whose word and precepts are true and righteous altogether. It shows how prevarication, exaggeration, and every kind of deception appear in God's sight.
His deception placed a stumbling block in Naaman's path at a time when Naaman had become favorably disposed toward serving the living God. For his greed and misuse of sacred service, the Lord punished his guilt with Naaman's leprosy clinging to him in lasting rejection. That punishment ended only with death and extended to his descendants.
The verse warns those handling sacred things that mixing sacred responsibilities with selfish, common purposes brings disgrace and harm upon God's work.
