And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, God save the king, God save the king. Hushai was David's longtime friend and counselor. When Absalom entered Jerusalem and took possession of Israel's stronghold, Hushai came to him and greeted him as king. The welcome surprised Absalom and pleased him. At that time Absalom was confident that his plans had succeeded, and he sought to strengthen his rule and win the confidence of the nation.
