2 Samuel 18:32

And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.

The king pressed Cushi with the same anxious question about whether the young man Absalom was safe. Cushi replied in the form of a wish that all the king's enemies and everyone rising against him to do him harm might share the young man's lot. David took the veiled reply as certain tidings that Absalom was dead. Crushed by grief at that understanding, he pursued the matter with no further questions.
