2 Samuel 6:8
And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perez-uzzah to this day. And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perez-uzzah to this day.
David was bringing up the ark to Jerusalem to honor it as the symbol of the divine presence, and the removal was attended with gladness and rejoicing. Uzzah laid his hand upon the ark, though it was not to be handled by an unauthorized person but only by a consecrated priest, and even then only with purification and preparation. Upon that touch the Lord made a breach upon Uzzah in fearful judgment, so that the season of gladness and rejoicing was turned into grief and mourning. The place where he fell was called Perez-uzzah, to keep the event in remembrance.
David was displeased and distressed by the stroke, astonished and greatly alarmed, questioning in his heart the justice of God because he could not understand why such a judgment had come when his purpose had been to honor God. Feeling that it would be unsafe to have the ark near him, he gave up for the time bringing it to Jerusalem and determined to let it remain near by, leaving it at the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
The stroke showed that God guarded the ark that contained His holy law, so that disrespect and irreverence toward the law brings judgment under His government. That law is the expression of His love and the transcript of His perfect character, and through the death of Jesus and His imputed righteousness sinners may be reconciled to God and escape the punishment due for disobedience to it.
