Deuteronomy 22:29
Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
The law applies when a man has wronged an unmarried girl, requiring him to take her as his wife. He must also pay compensation to her father, set at fifty shekels of silver. Once married under this requirement, he is forbidden to divorce her for the rest of his life. A parallel custom is found among the Santal, where a man in the same case must either marry the girl himself. If he does not marry her, he must instead furnish a dowry large enough to enable another man to marry her.
