Esther 4:6

So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king’s gate.

Hatach went out to Mordecai to the street of the city that was before the king's gate. Mordecai was there after putting on sackcloth and crying out over the decree issued against the Jews. When Esther's attendants told her of his distress, she sent Hatach to learn what had happened and why.

The meeting took place while Haman was seeking to destroy God's people, the Jews, who were under Medo-Persian rule. They were under the Persian king Xerxes, called Ahasuerus in the Bible. His plotted destruction failed because God intervened, frustrating his purpose and saving the Jews from their enemies through overruling providence. In the wider setting, Mordecai's prayer stands joined to Haman's death and Israel's deliverance.
