Esther 9:14

And the king commanded it so to be done: and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

The verse belongs to the account of Haman's plot under King Ahasuerus in Medo-Persia to destroy all the Jews, God's people. God frustrated, overruled, and thwarted that plot and saved and delivered the Jews from their enemies and destruction. The king commanded it to be done, the decree was given at Shushan, and Haman's ten sons were hanged there, carrying out the counter-decree.

This defeat of the enemies followed the decree that saved God's people from destruction and preserved the godly line. The reversal of Haman's plan to destroy the Jews came through the efforts of Mordecai and Esther and the prayers of the people, so the danger was turned aside and joy followed. The verse stands at the triumphant close showing the vindication of God's people and the utter and absolute defeat of wicked Haman as the devil's agent, thwarting Satan's attempt to destroy God's people through Medo-Persia.

The hanging of the ten sons ended the last remnant of the Amalekite race and the war of Amalek against the Lord's throne, and marked the end of Satan's attack on God's cause, work, and people. The passage gives the origin and beginning of the feast of Purim, together with Esther 9:26, after the defeat of the enemies of the Jews, with Purim named from Pur meaning lot for the casting of lots. The book of Esther does not contain the name of God in English, though His name occurs five times in the original in the form of an acrostic.

The deliverance from a threat of death illustrates the deliverance for those who refuse to obey human commands about worship. The verse shows God making the wrath of man to praise Him, turning wicked devices against His people into the means of bringing the knowledge of the true God to honest souls throughout the world, so that many from among the peoples were reached. The verse shows that the time of Christ's coming can be known by all who desire to understand and be ready, and that Christ will come between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844 to bring all His saints with Him and reward every man as his work shall be.
