Exodus 33:10
And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door. And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
After the sin at Sinai God had withdrawn Himself from the camp, and the people watched Moses go out to the tabernacle with fear that Moses too had been separated from them. With ornaments laid aside and hearts humbled, they stood in penitence at their tent doors. The scene stands within the larger pleading in which God still owns Israel as His people despite their perversity, while Moses urges that they are God's people and presses for assurance that God Himself will go with them.
When the cloudy pillar took its stand at the tabernacle entrance, it was the visible token and sign of the Lord's presence as He met and spoke with Moses. It marked that God had come to commune with him there. The glory shining in the cloud was that of Jesus Christ, speaking with Moses from within it as He had spoken from the burning bush. Its darkness veiled the brightness of the divine presence so that the people could endure to look toward it, and this veiling is God's way of approaching humanity.
The people understood the pillar as evidence that God was meeting with Moses and that Moses was pleading for them. They took its standing there as the sign that his intercession was accepted. That assurance gave them hope that they would not be destroyed or consumed, so they rejoiced, even weeping for joy. Then all the people rose up and worshiped, every man from his own tent door, acknowledging the Lord's presence. They bowed humbly to the ground before Him.
