Ezekiel 1:13

As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.

The likeness shown is of living creatures bright and fiery in appearance, like burning coals of fire and like lamps, with bright fire going up and down among them and lightning going forth out of the fire. This belongs to the vision given beside the Chebar in Ezekiel 1-2, which displays God's throne and the heavenly beings who direct the wheels.

The living creatures and the wheels appear intricate and difficult to understand, with wheels within wheels that look like confusion to the finite human eye. What so appears is under infinite wisdom, with a hand of infinite wisdom revealed amid the wheels bringing every part into perfect order and harmony, every wheel working in its right place in perfect harmony with every other part of the machinery. Though the work may appear tangled and complicated to human minds, God continually guides it in perfect order.

The vision shows heaven closely connected with events upon earth, that the world is not without a ruler, and that the Lord in power above earthly rulers directs coming events, the destiny of nations, and the concerns of His church, caring for those who are loyal to Him. He continually guides His work and overrules evil for the good of His faithful, loyal people. He devises ways to thwart wicked plans and brings to confusion the counsels of those plotting against His people.

The bright fire moving among the living creatures with the speed of lightning represents how swiftly the work will finally be completed, how quickly the heavenly messengers will carry God's work forward to its completion. Every one of God's workmen should study the vision in Ezekiel 1-2 with humility and earnest prayer. Human agents should depend on God to direct His work rather than try to control it themselves.
