He cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants.
Ezekiel 17:1-21 gives the account of Zedekiah, the last king in David's line to sit on the throne of the Lord over God's earthly kingdom. He entered into a solemn covenant before God to render loyal allegiance to the king of Babylon. The cropping of the top of the young twigs and carrying it into a land of traffic to set it in a city of merchants belongs to that account of his relation to Babylon.
When he broke that covenant, God removed the diadem and took off the crown in judgment. The kingdom was thereby made subject to Babylon. The throne of the Lord was thus taken away from this world, to be overturned through Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome.
It shall be no more until He come whose right it is. That coming One is Jesus the Son of the Highest. To Him God will give the throne of His father David, to reign over the house of Jacob forever at the end of this world.
