Ezekiel 36:32

Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord GOD, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel.

God restores and cleanses Israel not because Israel merits it but for the sake of His own holy name. The work is His doing, undertaken to uphold what His name stands for rather than to reward any worthiness in the people. In light of such unmerited mercy, Israel is to face the evil of its own ways and acknowledge them honestly. That recognition is to bring shame and sorrow, a confounded sense of unworthiness for how they have walked.
