Ezra 10:43

Of the sons of Nebo; Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, and Joel, Benaiah.

Ezra 10:43 names six men of the sons of Nebo — Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, Joel, and Benaiah reckoned among them — who had taken foreign wives in forbidden marriages. It belongs to the closing account of Ezra's efforts to separate the people from heathen influences. It stands in the record of the Jews' backsliding in foreign marriages and their return to obedience.

The setting in Ezra 9-10 is that the people undertook a practical separation from these alliances before they could be taught the law. The inquiry into and decisions about each individual case took two months. Their actions show that understanding the law requires a prepared heart, separation from the world, and willingness to obey God's commandments.

The verse belongs to God's clear counsel on marriage, given in love and mercy to spare bitter anguish of heart and painful regret for long years. It gives important instruction and timely warning to be carefully and prayerfully consulted and cheerfully obeyed and walked agreeably to, showing that marriage must be entered only in the Lord and only after its duties have been studied beforehand, since neglect brings frequent disappointment in that honorable estate and repentance at once too soon and too late. It illustrates that some Bible verses are lists of people rather than promises.
