Zerubbabel and the High Priest at the Temple Dedicationby emmanuel_higgins

Ezra 6:15

And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

The house that was finished was the second temple, completed on the third day of Adar, the twelfth month, in the sixth year of Darius the king of Persia. Its completion fulfilled the promise that Zerubbabel, who had laid the temple's foundation, would also finish it, and literally fulfilled it. The finishing followed Darius issuing a second decree for the building of the house of the Lord, following the decree of Cyrus.

The temple was finished long before Ezra came to Jerusalem, over seventy years after the first company of exiles returned with Zerubbabel and Joshua. By the time of Ezra's arrival, the work of restoration included the finished temple, with the city walls only partially repaired and much still remaining undone.

The account shows that God still moves upon the hearts of kings and rulers in behalf of His people while His Spirit strives with the world and the door of mercy remains open and is not yet closed. The Lord God of Israel has placed His goods in the hands of unbelievers to be used for the work that must be done for a fallen world, opening avenues through which the truth may go. What God moves worldly men and authorities to do and give for the advancement of His cause is to be received as well as imparted and not refused, even when the agents have no sympathy with the work and no faith in Christ. Believers are not to cut off favors, withdraw from help, bind up means God would set free, or come into conflict with authorities and powers over it.
