Ezra 7:3

The son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

This name stands as one link in the genealogy that traces Ezra's priestly ancestry back to Aaron. As Aaron's descendant, Ezra was chosen as an instrument of good for Israel to restore honor to the priesthood, whose glory had greatly diminished during the captivity. The verse itself is not the decree and makes no statement about the prophetic period.

It stands in the chapter containing the Persian king Artaxerxes' decree, dated to 457 B.C. That decree was to restore and build Jerusalem. That 457 date is used as the starting point for calculating the 2,300 years of Daniel 8:14.

The calculation was first thought by subtraction to end in 1843. Because the decree was issued near the end of 457 B.C., the period was reckoned to end in the fall of 1844 rather than at the end of 1843.
