Genesis 31:54
Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount. Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
Jacob's offering on the mount belongs to his break with Laban after long service, when he had grown weary and asked to go to his own place and country with his wives and children. Laban admitted that the Lord had blessed him for Jacob's sake and urged him to remain, while what had been little under Jacob's care had grown to a multitude until he increased exceedingly with cattle and servants. The immediate setting was growing hostility, for Laban's countenance turned against Jacob and Laban's sons charged him with taking away their father's glory. Left perplexed and fearful, Jacob remembered the promise made at Bethel, carried his case to God in prayer, and was answered in a dream with direction to return to the land of his fathers accompanied by the divine presence.
After a heap of stones had been raised as the token of the compact, the sacrifice and the shared meal on the mount confirmed the covenant of peace with Laban. Eating together and tarrying all night there in friendly communing sealed the treaty. At dawn Laban and his company departed, and with that separation all trace of connection between the children of Abraham and the dwellers in Mesopotamia ceased.
