Jacob's Family Reunites With Joseph in Egyptby KalebRosendahl

Genesis 46:7

His sons, and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.

The verse belongs to the time of severe famine in both Canaan and Egypt that followed Joseph's prediction, when abundant provision had been stored in Egypt. In that setting ten of Jacob's sons journeyed to Egypt to buy grain and bowed with their faces to the earth before Joseph without recognizing him.

The verse shows Abraham's seed had multiplied until Jacob brought his sons, his sons' sons, his daughters, his sons' daughters, and all his seed with him into Egypt, where they and their descendants sojourned for many years. God at last called them out of Egypt to lead them into the land of Canaan, with the purpose of making that enslaved nation into a people who would reveal His character to the idolatrous nations of the world. Had they been obedient to His word they would soon have entered the promised land, but because they were disobedient and rebellious they journeyed forty years in the wilderness and only two of the adults who left Egypt entered Canaan.
