Hosea 13:13

The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.

The pangs coming upon him are those of a woman in travail, portraying the judgment to fall upon Israel as anguish sudden and inescapable as childbirth. He is called an unwise son because he remains too long where children break forth, like a child that does not emerge when the time to be born has come. That delay means the people fail to respond with wisdom and in time to the crisis confronting them.

Read together with the next verse, Hosea 13:14, the saying points to the resurrection of the just. That resurrection is one of the earliest events on the day of Christ's power, standing at its beginning. Then the righteous are born from the dead to immortal life, made like their Lord and like Christ himself.
