Hosea 8:2

Israel shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee.

Israel cries out as a professed people of God, claiming Him as their God and claiming to know Him, while at the same time breaking His covenant and law and rejecting and casting off what is good, and that profession is contradicted by conduct and does not excuse unfaithfulness. The claim to know God is made void by disobedience to God's law, for transgression of His covenant proves the profession false. The inward contradiction is that while crying My God, we know Thee, they have hastened after another god, hiding iniquity in their hearts and loving unrighteous paths and the paths of unrighteousness. The outward contradiction is seen in discarding the Lord's Sabbath and exalting a false sabbath in its place.

The same condition applies to those who profess loyalty to God but exalt human laws above His law. It describes professed people in a backslidden condition just before the second advent. Such ones need to be awakened to their danger and roused to prepare for the solemn events connected with the close of probation.

For such false professors the day of the Lord connected with the close of probation will not be light and deliverance but great and very terrible, darkness and not light, even very dark with no brightness in it. This is because He who appears is of purer eyes than to behold evil and cannot look on iniquity, being too pure to look upon evil. Therefore they will be unable to abide His appearing and to stand before Him when He appears.
