Isaiah 13:8
And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames. And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
The verse portrays the terror and anguish of the day of the Lord when destruction comes from the Almighty. Those seized by it are afraid, gripped by pangs and sorrows and pain like a woman in labor. They stare at one another in amazement, with faces like flames that turn pale and show distress, and their strength and courage fail.
Its setting links this fear to God's punishment of the wicked and the ending of human pride. The description applies to the seven last plagues, the time of wrath just before Christ's return. It shows what befalls those unprepared to meet the Lord on the great judgment day, when transgressors of God's law who have rejected Christ's atonement face judgment.
